Mission

The Senior Unity Developer works with the rest of the development team to create the technical aspects of the game. Besides tackling the more challenging technical aspects of the game development,, they are the link between the programmers and the Product Owner. They have a deep understanding of the technical aspects of the game and have a good overview of the project as a whole. They are the go-to person for code architecture and best practices for programming, and ensure that technical issues are tackled in the right way.

  • Take full responsibility for the technical aspects of the game and development team
  • Ensure clean, stable deliveries of the game throughout the development process
  • Working with the development team, make decisions on the technical architecture and challenging technical aspects of the game
  • Ensure a stable codebase that is future-proof
  • Coach the programmers on the development team on technical aspects of the job
  • Align technologies, best practices and lessons learned with other development teams
  • Minimize bugs, and find effective solutions for technical issues

Role based competencies

The Senior Developer has excellent programming and game development skills, and is able to coach other developers to improve their skills and code. They have deep knowledge on all things technical. For example:

  • Excellent broad and deep programming skills in Unity C#
  • Deep understanding of system- and architecture design, best practices and programming patterns
  • Excellent ability to setup the system architecture and create technical parts of the game, going beyond functionality to add the “spark” to the codebase and all aspects of the game experience
  • Ability to set the quality bar appropriately and coach team members to meet these standards
  • Ability to prioritize their own workload and that of others
  • Ability to accurately identify the technical risks and priorities for the game production
  • Deep understanding of  of deep-dive debugging and performance optimizations

Apart from these technical skills, the Senior Developer is the link between programmers, Product Owners and other members of the team. They take ownership over the technical aspects of the game development process. They have the expertise and leadership skills to coach and lead other developers, in order to grow and align the team to achieve the desired results. For example:

  • Ability to clearly communicate with Product Owner and stakeholders on complicated technical aspects of the game
  • Highly professional attitude, with the ability to provide stability, direction, guidance, knowledge and insights to the development team
  • Ability to take on a leading role in a small multidisciplinary team (6-12 team members)
  • Ability to provide excellent analysis and feedback in code reviews, raising the quality bar and effectiveness of the entire team
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal

Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience with game development
  • 1+ years experience with mobile game development
  • Read, write and talk excellent English
  • Able to work 40 hours per week at the studio in The Hague (40 hours preferred)
  • Plus: Unreal / C++ experience
